Henleyfield Happenings

August - July - June - May - April

August, 2010:

Hi Folks:

Well, it’s still hot, and there still isn’t much going on this month until the weekend of Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th.  That’s when Henleyfield will be the site of a major benefit archery competition organized by Mark Wallace.

Here is what Mark has to say about it:

The event is a 3-D mechanical pop-up target competition. We will also have a long distance shoot, a dot shoot and a kid’s archery corner somewhere on the grounds. We have local, state and national sponsors and will also have vendors set up to sell their goods. Some of the local vendors are a custom knife maker, a custom turkey call maker and a local archer that does flint knapping ( he also happens to be #7 in the world for primitive archery competition). We will set up on Friday and have a night shoot Friday night for local folks and the setup team. The Saturday shoot will be from 9am till.

All the different shoots will take place simultaneously during the day and the finals will be held at 4:30 that evening. We will have food, drinks and music playing all day. We are planning an archery swap meet and lots of other activities. This event is growing daily and we are anticipating around 300 people during the day. We will have novice and champion archers from several states.

Y’all are more than welcome to attend as it is open to the public. All the proceeds raised go to the Ms. Chapter of Wheelin Sportsmen. Wheelin Sportsmen is housed under the National Wild Turkey Federation and is a 501-C3 organization. We provide outdoor opportunities for individuals with disabilities, not just in wheelchairs. I am the state coordinator for Mississippi and you can go to NWTF.org and click on the Wheelin Sportsmen icon and read about what we do.

This sounds like a whole lot of fun, so mark your calendars and plan to participate or just come by to see what’s happening.

If you’ve been past the Community Center recently, you can’t help but notice the flower beds.  The flowers around our big sign, the coleus under the tree, everything looking perky and well tended in spite of the withering heat.  All of this is thanks to the hard work of Warren and Mary Megehee, who are out there at 6 in the morning on a regular basis.

To the Megehees, a big thanks from all of us!

Try to keep cool, everyone,

July 2010:

Well, actually, there is not much happening in July – it’s just too hot!  We do have some announcements, though.

First, HCI is considering offering computer classes if we have enough interest.  These classes will be taught by Yvette Williams, and offered free to the community. There are two levels, Basics and Intermediate.

The Basics hands-on workshop would include turning on the machine, working with the desktop, taskbar, maximizing and minimizing windows, Programs Menu, accessing programs - opening and saving files to My documents, printing files, Internet Explorer Basics (even though Internet is not available), and correctly shutting down the computer.

Intermediate Hands-On Workshop - would include organizing (moving, copying, renaming, deleting ) files/folder , file extensions, the right mouse button, checking and defragmenting the hard drive, Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, User Accounts, Display settings, email - sending attachments.

Now we realize that if you’re getting this email, you may already be a pretty competent user, so please, if you know someone who might be interested in either of these classes, pass this information on.  Ask them to contact Laura Ousset at 601-798-0698 for more information, or you could respond via email of course.

As you may know, at our Annual Meeting in January the Membership approved a Board proposal to establish an annual $1000 scholarship, to be awarded to a graduating high school senior each year.  We have set up the criteria for this award and are in contact with each of the three area high schools.  We would like them to make the application available to their students, and to include the HCI scholarship in their awards presentations.

Click here for scholarship details and the application form. The first award will be made in the Spring of 2011.  We are very excited about this program and feel it will be a real benefit to our community.

The Community Center building and the Pavilion are available at no cost for use by the community on a first-come, first-served basis for parties, family reunions, picnics and so forth.  To reserve a date for these facilities, simply contact any Board member.  HOWEVER, the person reserving the facility MUST sign the HCI User’s Agreement within three days of making the reservation in order for us to hold the date.  These agreement forms and the Community Center Usage Guidelines are available at Fortenberry’s Slaughter House on Hwy 43.

A gentle reminder – if you haven’t renewed your membership this year, please consider doing so.  HCI is a vital part of this community, and we rely heavily on our members and wonderful volunteers to provide some of the services and activities that make this community so special.  Our membership form is available on our website.

Stay safe – keep cool – have a great July!

June 2010:

Hi Folks!

Our first-ever Community Yard Sale will be held on June 12. It is free to our community, you set the prices, you pocket the proceeds.  Call Lisa McCammon if you have any questions. It should be a lot of fun.

--------------

On the last weekend of the month, the Pearl River County chapter of the American Radio Relay League will hold their annual Field Day at the Community Center. These are the ham radio folks who kept communications going for weeks after The Storm when nobody else was talking to anybody.  They will be out there for 24 hours starting on Saturday the 26th at 1:00pm. Come out and see what ham radio is like today.
